The Dodgers' results have been inconsistent lately, but on June 22 they received encouraging news: Teoscar Hernandez, the powerful outfielder who has been out for nearly a month with a strained left hamstring, will head to Triple-A on June 24 for a rehab stint. Barring any setbacks, he could return by June 30 for the series versus the Athletics.
Hernandez landed on the injured list in late May due to a left hamstring strain. He has recently resumed live batting practice, and the team has confirmed he will play four to five rehab games in Triple-A. According to the current plan, as long as he experiences no discomfort, he should be able to return to the majors by the end of June.
Affectionately nicknamed "Spanish Teacher" by fans, the slugger posted a .276 batting average, seven home runs, and 31 RBIs in his first 51 games this season. Since 2018, excluding the shortened 2020 season, he has hit at least 20 homers every year, with his consistent power production being his greatest asset. Last season, he recorded 25 home runs and 89 RBIs.
Hernandez's impending return is a timely boost for the Dodgers. The team has been struggling lately, suffering a 12-1 blowout loss to the Baltimore Orioles on June 22 in the finale of a three-game series, which they lost 2-1. This marks their first two-game losing streak since May 12.
Starting pitcher Emmet Sheehan had a rough outing, allowing five runs over just 3.1 innings. After the game, he took responsibility, saying, "At this point in the season, my coaches and teammates deserve better from me." Manager Dave Roberts also admitted that both the pitching and the lineup were off, stating, "We didn't start well, and the offense didn't show up. At least we managed to win one game in this series."
In addition to Hernandez, the Dodgers provided updates on other injuries. Catcher Will Smith will not travel with the team this week and will remain in Los Angeles for recovery training. Reliever Blake Treinen has been placed on the injured list due to right elbow inflammation, but an MRI showed no structural damage, and the team expects his absence to be brief.
