Shohei Ohtani, the Dodgers' two-way superstar, opened the game as the leadoff hitter and crushed his 17th homer of the year in his first at-bat. That home run sparked the team's energy, and in the sixth inning Freddie Freeman followed with a decisive solo homer, helping the Dodgers secure a 2-1 win against the Minnesota Twins. As a result, Los Angeles is now the first club in the majors to achieve 50 victories this season.
Ohtani started the game as the leadoff designated hitter. In the top of the first, facing Twins right-handed starter Zebby Matthews, he connected perfectly with an 87 mph changeup and drove it over the right-field wall, with a projected distance of 414 feet. Ohtani went 1-for-4 at the plate and was intentionally walked in the eighth inning, bringing his batting average to .296 after the game.
The Twins answered immediately in the bottom of the first with a solo homer to tie the game, but Dodgers' Freeman broke the deadlock in the top of the sixth with his 13th home run of the season. To counter Minnesota's right-handed hitters in the top of the lineup, Los Angeles employed an "opener" strategy, using right-handed reliever Will Klein for the first inning before handing the ball to left-hander Lauer, who effectively silenced the Twins' bats. The Dodgers' bullpen ultimately held the one-run lead, improving their record to 50-29, the best in the majors.
