Dalton Rushing, the 25-year-old backup catcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, had a disagreement with Shohei Ohtani on the field today, causing Ohtani to rarely show a stern expression and seriously discuss the matter with Rushing. Rushing admitted his mistake after the game, saying he felt deeply ashamed.
In the first inning, Ohtani wanted to challenge a ball/strike call but was denied by Rushing, looking quite frustrated. In the second inning, a communication breakdown on pitch selection led to a passed ball by Rushing, giving up the first run. After that, Ohtani again tried to challenge a call and was denied again, but he insisted and succeeded in overturning the decision. The two then had a conversation on the mound, with Ohtani looking unusually serious. This chaotic inning cost Ohtani three runs, but he ultimately completed six innings and, with support from the lineup, secured the win.
At the plate, Rushing went 0-for-4. Broadcast footage captured him losing his composure and expressing intense regret, and manager Dave Roberts and Freddie Freeman both came over to console him.
Rushing, with his head down during the post-game interview, admitted he felt extremely embarrassed: "I felt embarrassed from start to finish. Shohei Ohtani is incredible and controls the game, but even so, I still feel very embarrassed."
When asked what he said to Ohtani on the mound, Rushing replied: "That was my fault. I messed up. Today helped me understand him better."
Notably, Dodgers' starting catcher Will Smith has caught for Ohtani in 10 games this season, with Ohtani posting a 0.74 ERA. However, Smith is currently out with an injury. When Rushing catches for Ohtani, Ohtani's ERA soars to 4.34.
