The New York Yankees' Triple-A affiliate announced that it will debut a new team name in 2027.

A new chapter is beginning for the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate located in northeastern Pennsylvania.

The team, presently called the "RailRiders," revealed today that it will drop the RailRiders moniker, in place since 2013, effective with the 2027 season. The new look will be introduced in November. This is the first full rebranding announced by a Minor League Baseball team since prior to the 2026 campaign.

In a press release, the team stated that the new identity will "celebrate the region's natural beauty, historic heritage, and outdoor culture, while strengthening the connection between the team, its community, and one of the most iconic organizations in professional sports" — referring to its parent club, the New York Yankees, based in the Bronx.

"This rebranding aims to create an identity that will bring our community together for generations to come," said Shawn Reilly, team president and general manager, in the release. "As we look ahead to the future of baseball in northeastern Pennsylvania, we see an opportunity to create something deeply rooted in this region while honoring the baseball tradition that has defined this team for decades. We are very excited to share the next chapter with our fans."

The team, which plays its home games in Moosic, Pennsylvania, traces its roots to 1989, when the Philadelphia Phillies' Triple-A affiliate, the Maine Phillies, relocated there. From that season through 2006, the club competed as the "Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons." It then switched its parent affiliation from the Phillies to the Yankees and adopted the name "Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees."

In 2012, due to a complete reconstruction of PNC Field (known as Lackawanna County Stadium before 2007), the team spent the entire season on the road and was temporarily called the "Empire State Yankees." With the new ballpark completed, the 2013 season naturally ushered in the "RailRiders" era.

The RailRiders reached the International League Championship Series last season, with a roster that included Cam Schlittler and Spencer Jones. Meanwhile, the 2016 RailRiders squad was particularly stacked, featuring a 24-year-old rookie named Aaron Judge, and they went on to win both the International League title and the Triple-A National Championship.
