On June 22 Beijing time, with the NBA free agency period still some time away, the basketball world continues to await clarity on the future plans of Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James.

ESPN reporter Ramona Shelburne revealed on a show today that even the Lakers' front office is uncertain about James' decision: whether he will remain with the Lakers, test the waters as a free agent with other teams, or retire outright.
Shelburne explained: "LeBron is the Lakers' own free agent, and the team has priority in negotiating with him. From what I understand, the team has already started preliminary talks with James' agent (Rich Paul), but in those conversations, James' side gave no commitment to staying with the team next season.Sources describe the current relationship between the two sides as simply 'staying in touch.'"
"That means, at this stage, neither a decision to stay has been finalized, nor have specific salary figures been discussed. The outside reading is that LeBron is still weighing all possibilities, including retirement or joining another team. If he intends to move to a different squad, how much salary that team can offer is also a key factor in his considerations."
For the 2025-26 season, LeBron's annual salary stands at $52.6 million. At 41 years old, he continues to deliver efficient performances on the court. The Lakers are able to offer him a max contract that no other team in the league can match, but Shelburne indicated that the Lakers are interested in lowering his annual salary—a proposal that is highly unlikely to be accepted by James.

Shelburne continued: "An insider reminded me that the core conflict here is that, if James returns to the Lakers, a previous report by McMenamin mentioned thatJames feels he has willingly taken a backseat to Reaves and Doncic in the Lakers' hierarchy, willingly serving as the team's third option, and has made many sacrifices without receiving the respect he deserves. Under these circumstances, how could he possibly accept a pay cut?"
"Even if the Lakers' offer is still higher than any other team's—say $30 million—that would be $22 million less than his previous season's salary, which is exactly the key point both sides are currently weighing."

If James decides to leave the Lakers, he will undoubtedly spark a bidding war among many teams in free agency. However, no one can be certain whether this legendary star is willing to play another season.
