2 years, $14 million! 40-year-old Horford will decline player option, re-sign with Warriors

On June 25, per Shams Charania, Al Horford of the Golden State Warriors is set to turn down his player option and agrees to a two-year, $14 million deal to stay in Golden State. At age 40, Horford now joins the ranks as the 13th NBA player to have played for 20 seasons.

Al Horford, born June 3, 1986, is a Dominican big man standing 6'9" (2.03 m). He was selected with the third overall pick in the first round of the 2007 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks.

In his regular-season career, Horford has played 1,183 games, averaging 12.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game, with a field goal percentage of 50.7% and a steady three-point percentage of 37.6%. He is a model of the modern stretch big. A five-time All-Star, his game is extremely versatile — he can score in the post, hit mid-range jumpers, space the floor with three-point shooting, and also facilitate passing and protect the rim. In the playoffs, he has played 197 games, averaging 11.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. His tenacious defense and clutch performances have helped his teams break through many barriers, and he won his only NBA championship with the Boston Celtics.

Horford has played for five teams throughout his career: the Hawks, Celtics, 76ers, Thunder, and Warriors. In his younger years, he was the interior cornerstone in Atlanta; during his peak, he became a two-way pillar in Boston. Now past 40, he continues to maintain excellent form. Last regular season, he averaged 8.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game while shooting 36.1% from three, allowing him to seamlessly fit into the Warriors' system as a frontcourt rotation player and veteran leader in the locker room.

As a renowned NBA iron man, Horford has avoided long-term injuries through scientific and disciplined body management. He combines basketball IQ with professionalism, able to anchor the interior in tough games while also mentoring younger players as a veteran. This two-year contract allows him to remain in the Bay Area and finish his legendary career alongside Stephen Curry.
