The comeback of Classic LoL has made the community search again for tactics that seemed lost. In particular, the two very straightforward AP and AD rune setups once employed by Faker during his reign in solo queue are drawing significant interest.
Early League of Legends had a completely different rune system from today. Players had to build a page consisting of Red, Yellow, Blue, and Quintessence runes with a total of 30 slots, and choose each stat appropriate for their champion.
During the period Faker simultaneously held the rank 1 and rank 2 positions on the ranked server. Surprisingly, he did not need a wide array of specialized rune pages.
Instead, the T1 star mainly used two basic sets for AP and AD champions. This simplicity shows that Faker prioritized versatility and adaptability over trying to optimize each champion individually.
For magic damage champions, Faker used 9 Red Magic Penetration runes, 9 Yellow Health per Level runes, 6 Blue Cooldown Reduction per Level runes, 3 Blue Ability Power per Level runes, and 3 Quintessence Ability Power runes.
This is not a build focused entirely on early game damage. Faker accepted sacrificing some immediate stats in exchange for better scaling ability.
Magic penetration increases skill damage, while health per level and cooldown reduction per level significantly improve strength as the game goes on.
The page for physical champions consisted of 9 Red Attack Damage runes, 9 Yellow Armor runes, 6 Blue Cooldown Reduction per Level runes, 3 Blue Magic Resist per Level runes, 2 Quintessence Attack Damage runes, and 1 Quintessence Attack Speed rune.
It was that single attack speed rune that became a detail drawing attention from the community. Although it does not optimize pure damage, this choice makes basic attacks, last hitting, and trading smoother.
These two seemingly simple rune pages clearly reflect Faker's early style: not overly elaborate but effective enough in many situations.
With Classic League of Legends, the formulas that once brought Faker to the top of the ranked ladder now have a chance to be recreated by players after many years.
