Amid speculation about a possible return to Real Madrid, Benfica coach Jose Mourinho remains quite reserved when discussing his future.
After stopping in the Champions League quarter-finals, Real Madrid's leadership is reportedly urgently seeking a new captain, to replace interim coach Alvaro Arbeloa. Among the names mentioned is Jose Mourinho, the strategist currently working at Benfica.
Regarding rumors of a reappearance at the Bernabeu, the "Special One" remains quite cautious when addressing his future, especially since he still has a contract with the Portuguese club until 2027.
Speaking to A BOLA, Mourinho stated: "I cannot predict that, how could I be certain? It doesn't depend solely on me, that's clear.
A coach within a team, or a player, communications director, physiotherapist… all of us within a club structure, just like you, a journalist from A BOLA, you cannot guarantee you'll still be there in ten years. You might want that, but you cannot be sure. Clearly, I cannot guarantee that either."
Notably, the two-year contract between Jose Mourinho and Benfica includes a noteworthy clause, allowing him to leave without paying compensation if he accepts an offer to coach another team. However, this clause is only valid for 10 days after Benfica's final match of the season, creating a decisive window.
This detail makes Mourinho's potential reunion with Real Madrid this summer more financially feasible, especially if President Florentino Perez makes the decision.
Mourinho previously coached Real Madrid from 2010–2013, winning one La Liga title but failing to conquer the Champions League. More than a decade later, the 1963-born manager continued his journey at top European clubs before accepting the role at Benfica last September.
Meanwhile, Benfica currently ranks second in the Portuguese National Championship, trailing league leaders Porto by seven points with four rounds remaining.
