Arsenal receives a verdict on the Premier League championship.

Legend Alan Shearer asserts that Manchester City holds an absolute advantage in the race for the Premier League crown, after defeating Arsenal in the "six-point" match.

The 2026 Premier League title race has seen a crucial turning point after Manchester City defeated Arsenal 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium. Despite "The Gunners" putting up a valiant performance, Erling Haaland's decisive goal helped Pep Guardiola's squad narrow the gap to just 3 points and seize control of their destiny with one game still to play.

Speaking on the channel NBC Sports, Alan Shearer - the greatest scorer in the league's history - did not hesitate to place his trust in Man City's dominance. He believes the victory over their direct rival not only carries significance in terms of points but also serves as a statement of their character.

Arsenal has finished second for three consecutive seasons

“Yes, I always felt City would win this match. Considering their current form, the experience they possess, and the winning momentum they hold, I believe they will continue to claim the championship,” Shearer affirmed. According to him, this confidence emanates from every corner of the Etihad: “Look at Pep, look at Haaland, look at the supporters in the stadium and listen to the cheers, you get the feeling that they are experiencing exactly the same sentiment.”

Conversely, Shearer expressed regret for Arsenal as the team squandered golden opportunities in the second half, particularly Kai Havertz's chance in the closing minutes. He questioned the spirit of the London side during the preceding period: “Where has that spirit been over the past five or six weeks? That is the big question. They performed better in terms of energy, were more proactive, yet still did not achieve the result.”

If they secure victory in their midweek postponed match against Burnley, Manchester City will officially ascend to the top of the Premier League standings

The former Newcastle striker also pointed out that the loss to Bournemouth last week was the real "blow" that caused Arsenal to lose their psychological momentum: “It's very difficult for you to simply flip a switch and start playing well again. You need momentum, and currently only one team has good momentum, that is Manchester City.”

Although Shearer fully supports Man City, another legend Wayne Rooney holds a more optimistic view for "The Gunners". Rooney believes the race still has many variables and Arsenal still leads in points. However, control of their destiny now lies in Pep Guardiola's hands. If they defeat Burnley midweek, Man City will officially occupy the top spot.

Manager Pep Guardiola, while pleased, remained extremely cautious regarding the packed schedule: “The league table tells the whole story, they (Arsenal) are the outstanding team. Do not forget to focus on the main objective. Achieving that will be very difficult because we still have to face tough opponents like Everton or Newcastle.”
