Indonesian fans react fiercely because their team parked the bus when facing Vietnam.

U17 Indonesia was eliminated after drawing with Vietnam, but what angered fans was how their team chose a negative defensive approach in a situation where they had to win.

U17 Indonesia officially stopped at the Southeast Asia U17 tournament after a 0-0 draw against U17 Vietnam in the final match of Group A. This result was insufficient for the host team to secure a spot in the semifinals, given that they needed a win to determine their fate. Conversely, U17 Vietnam, with a proactive and solid performance, convincingly claimed the top spot in the group.

From the very beginning of the match, U17 Vietnam confidently entered the game and quickly controlled the situation. Dangerous finishing attempts were continuously created, while Indonesia actively retreated into deep defense. This approach became the focal point of criticism, as the host team failed to demonstrate the must-win spirit – something that particularly disappointed their supporters.

On social media, a wave of criticism from Indonesian fans erupted immediately after the match. Many could not hide their sarcasm: “Congratulations on the bus parking! Enough to draw and enough to be eliminated from the group stage right at home.” This opinion quickly spread, reflecting dissatisfaction with a tactic deemed overly negative.

Many fans raised big questions about the tactical mindset of the coaching staff. One frustrated person said: “What are the players and coaching staff doing? This match we had to win at all costs to advance, but they played so deep as if they already had a semifinal ticket in hand???” This viewpoint shows the confusion when the team chose to defend in a situation with no way back.

Sarcasm continued with more sharp comments: “Is this a city bus cup tournament?” or “I said it before, this is the worst youth team in Indonesia's history. The playing style is unclear, only focused on defending and using long balls. I don't understand what the youth development strategy is!” These assessments show that disappointment does not stop at just one match.

Nevertheless, there are still some opinions calling for sympathy towards the young players. One fan shared: “These are still young players who can develop further, don't be too harsh! Moreover, this generation of players from the opponent Vietnam is very strong, so we can sympathize with our players.” However, the wave of anger still dominates, as this failure is seen as a consequence of a wrong tactical choice.

The outcome of being eliminated right from the group stage is not only a failure in terms of results, but also exposes a major issue in the tactical thinking of U17 Indonesia. By choosing an extreme defensive playing style in a match they had to win, the youth team from the archipelago pushed themselves into a deadlock, and the fierce reaction from fans shows that trust is being seriously shaken.
