Vietnam's new head coach receives the best news from FIFA

Vietnam's women's national team maintains its number one spot in Southeast Asia in the FIFA standings following the arrival of a new head coach.

According to the latest rankings released by FIFA on April 21, the Vietnam women's national team is ranked 37th globally with 1,593.71 points. This ranking is calculated based on performance during the 33rd SEA Games (December 14, 2025) and the 2026 Women's Asian Cup finals held in March 2026.

In Asia, the Vietnam women's national team ranks 6th, behind Japan (5th), North Korea (11th), Australia (15th), China (16th), and South Korea (19th), while placing above Philippines (39th), Taiwan (40th), and Thailand (50th). In Southeast Asia, despite dropping one spot on the FIFA rankings, the Vietnam women's team still maintains its leading position. Following are Philippines, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, Singapore, and Timor-Leste.

This is very encouraging news for new head coach Hoang Van Phuc, who was recently selected to replace coach Mai Duc Chung. Having a favorable FIFA ranking will greatly assist the Vietnam women's national team in seed classification for future tournaments such as the Asian region Women's World Cup qualifiers or the Women's Asian Cup qualifiers.

After consulting the National Coaching Council and various professional departments, and based on specific tasks, the Vietnam Football Federation and coach Hoang Van Phuc held discussions regarding the goals and development plan for the Vietnam Women's National Football Team. Both parties reached an agreement for Mr. Hoang Van Phuc to assume the head coach position from May 01, 2026 until the conclusion of the 34th SEA Games.

The primary task for new head coach Hoang Van Phuc is to focus on team building, preparing optimally for the Vietnam women's football team's participation in the 2026 Asian Games (ASIAD 20), scheduled in Japan from September 19 to October 04, 2026, followed by the 34th SEA Games hosted in Malaysia.

The rankings for women's national teams also apply a real-time updating mechanism similar to the men's team rankings. Consequently, teams' standings can change even while matches are ongoing. The official rankings will be confirmed after all matches in the FIFA Days/FIFA Series period conclude.
