Vietnamese Coach Unexpectedly Leaves South American Team to Join Coach Park's Team

Coach Nguyen Hoang Lan left the Guyana national team after just approximately one month of assuming his duties to come back to Vietnam for employment.

Coach Nguyen Hoang Lan unexpectedly parted ways with the Guyana national team after only about a month of accepting the position to return to Vietnam, joining Bac Ninh Club which is competing in the National First Division. This rather swift return has drawn attention, as he had recently made significant progress in his coaching career within the international football environment.

According to the latest announcement from Bac Ninh Club, Nguyen Hoang Lan has been appointed to the language assistant position, replacing Hoang Xuan Bach – who previously worked with Coach Philippe Troussier at the Vietnamese national teams. Here, he will assist head coach Paulo Foiani in the journey to compete for promotion to the V.League next season. Currently, Bac Ninh is ranked second in the standings and still has many opportunities to break through.

His quick departure from Guyana surprised many, as in mid-March, the Guyana Football Federation officially entrusted him with two important roles: assistant to the national team and head coach of the Guyana U20 team. This was considered a special milestone, marking the rare occasion of a Vietnamese coach taking on a key professional role within a South American football system.

Before pursuing a professional coaching path, Nguyen Hoang Lan was a sports journalist. Subsequently, he shifted his focus to football work and spent many years with The Cong Viettel Club in the role of language assistant. Over 10 years of work there helped him accumulate valuable experience in supporting the coaching staff as well as developing young players.

The most significant achievement during his time working with The Cong Viettel was winning the V.League championship in 2020. Additionally, he contributed to many successes at youth levels such as U17 and U21. Due to his good foreign language skills and deep tactical understanding, he has always been regarded as a crucial link in the professional operational system of the military-clad club.

Beyond the domestic arena, Mr. Lan also participated with the club in the AFC Champions League 2021 and AFC Cup 2022. Experiences at the continental level helped him further refine his tactical thinking, particularly in defensive organization, transitioning between phases, and developing young players. Therefore, his arrival at Bac Ninh is expected to bring considerable value in the fiercely competitive promotion race.
