Napoli: Conte's departure inevitable?

The relationship between Napoli and coach Antonio Conte is entering its most sensitive phase since their collaboration began. The recent 0-2 home defeat to Lazio, an early surrender in the title race, has heightened tensions.

Signs of fracture are evident through declining performance, fan reactions, Conte's own statements, and the club's upper management's attitude. All are pointing toward an increasingly likely scenario: parting ways after the 2025-26 season.

When expectations clash with reality

Inter's victory over Cagliari in the early match of round 33 should have motivated Napoli to be more determined against Lazio, a team with no remaining objectives this season, but the opposite occurred. According to Italian press reports, Napoli "disintegrated," playing lifelessly and creating almost no significant dangerous opportunities. They even failed to hit Lazio's goal frame once throughout the match.

Fan disappointment is inevitable. The hashtag #ConteOut spread widely on social media. Criticism has escalated from sporadic outbursts to a wave. Napoli does not resemble a team labeled as reigning champions and does not fight like those responsible for defending the title. Scoring only 48 goals after 33 matches reflects a serious decline.

However, fairly assessing this season, Napoli has been heavily impacted by injuries. The team lost key players for extended periods, with over 30 muscle injuries, mostly severe. In that context, maintaining a Top 3 position and almost securing Champions League qualification is actually a commendable achievement. Conte himself declared "finishing second is still the best among the losers," but his phrasing inadvertently widened the gap with fans.

This has been a turbulent season for Napoli, and Conte's overly strong personality is also a factor. The most intense was his statement "I don't want to accompany someone who is already dead," referring to Napoli players' decay in the 0-2 loss to Bologna in November 2025. That was not just criticism of the team but seen as a denial of collective spirit. Subsequently, Conte continued expressing dissatisfaction with transfer policy, arguing that bringing in nine new players disrupted the squad. Tensions escalated as he nearly vanished from media: since October 2025, Conte refused pre-match press conferences, even criticizing the press for "using his name to generate content."

Most recently, Conte hinted at a possible departure from Napoli by openly "self-nominating" for the Italy national team coaching position. He would genuinely be ready to leave if an opportunity arises.

The partnership between coach Antonio Conte and Napoli is nearing its end

De Laurentiis awaits Conte's request

President Aurelio De Laurentiis stated he would not prevent Conte if invited to coach the Italy national team. In a recent interview with The Athletic, this film mogul confirmed he is awaiting Conte's formal request to proceed with finding a replacement, indicating Napoli is also prepared for the possibility of parting with Conte.

This rift was foreseeable. Conte, as widely known, has a style of "many demands, little compromise." He always requires an ambitious project with significant investment for immediate success, while Napoli tends toward strategic adjustment: squad rejuvenation, wage control, and more sustainable development. These two directions are nearly irreconcilable; parting ways might be the most graceful solution before the relationship erodes from unavoidable conflicts.

Napoli has won the Scudetto, reached peaks, and now the question about the future arises. Should they continue with a coach who constantly demands more and is always poised for internal conflicts, or shift toward a more stable, long-term direction? In this context, Conte's inclination toward the Italy national team is not just a personal choice but an exit route for both sides.

Whether Conte is invited to coach the Azzurri or not, a separation at season's end would be a logical conclusion for a relationship that has reached its limit. A peaceful parting is also advisable, as it is a luxury both Napoli and Conte have long missed.
