Following the FIFA rankings update, the Vietnam National Team still holds a spot in the global top 100, even though they did not participate in any June friendlies.
The Vietnam National Team has just received positive news from the FIFA rankings after the world football body completed the update of results from international matches during the FIFA Days in June 2026. Although they played no friendly matches, Coach Kim Sang-sik's squad maintained their 99th place in the world with 1,225.68 points. Additionally, Vietnam remains 17th in Asia and second in Southeast Asia, behind only Thailand.
Earlier, there were considerable concerns about Vietnam potentially dropping out of the FIFA top 100. The reason was that the red-shirted team was one of the few Southeast Asian representatives not participating in international friendlies in June. With many direct rivals having opportunities to accumulate points, remaining inactive made the risk of Vietnam sliding down the rankings more evident than ever.
However, developments on the pitch turned out favorably for Coach Kim Sang-sik's side. Several chasing teams behind them did not achieve the desired results, thus failing to overtake Vietnam in the rankings. As a result, Vietnam's place in the world's top 100 was preserved after the latest FIFA update.
Notably, Mozambique was one of the teams capable of surpassing Vietnam if they won their June friendlies. Their opponent was Indonesia, a team boasting quality naturalized players and showing clear improvement recently. Ultimately, Indonesia secured a narrow 1-0 victory, thereby blocking Mozambique's opportunity to leap forward.
This victory not only gave Indonesia a significant points boost, moving them up four places to 118th in the world, but also indirectly benefited Vietnam. If Mozambique had taken all three points, the situation at the bottom of the FIFA top 100 could have changed considerably. Therefore, the result of this match is considered one of the key factors helping Vietnam maintain its current ranking.
In the coming period, the FIFA rankings are expected to experience major fluctuations as the 2026 World Cup kicks off with very high coefficient points. As for Vietnam, the team will gather at the end of June, travel to South Korea for training and closed-door friendlies to prepare for the AFF Cup 2026. In the regional tournament, Coach Kim Sang-sik's squad is placed in Group A alongside Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia, and Timor-Leste.Vietnam's opening match will take place on July 24th at Timor-Leste's home ground.
