The ceremony not only kicked off the tournament featuring 48 national teams but also stood out for how Mexico chose to tell its own story through music, art, and traditional cultural values.

Held at the legendary Azteca Stadium — the first venue in history to host three World Cup opening matches — the 90-minute pre-match artistic program transformed the venue into a festive space filled with sound, color, and emotion. The performances blended folk art, indigenous cultural elements, and modern staging technology, presenting an image of Mexico that preserves its traditions while looking toward the future.

The highlight of the event was the debut performance of the official 2026 World Cup song, "Dai Dai," performed by Colombian singer Shakira and Nigerian artist Burna Boy. FIFA's choice of two artists from Latin America and Africa for the centerpiece act was seen as a symbol of cultural connection and the global reach of football.

In addition, a host of famous artists from Mexico and Latin America, including J Balvin, Maná, Lila Downs, Belinda, Los Ángeles Azules, and Alejandro Fernández, appeared on stage. Notably, the presence of singer Lila Downs — known for blending contemporary music with indigenous Mexican languages and melodies — helped celebrate the cultural diversity of the host nation.

One of the unique features of this year's opening ceremony was the direct participation of the audience in many performances. According to FIFA, fans were not just spectators but became part of the artistic program through interactive activities specially designed for the opening day celebration.

The event also carried historical significance as it kicked off the first World Cup with 48 participating teams and the first to be hosted across three countries. From Mexico City, the flame of the world's biggest football festival will continue to be passed to host cities in Canada and the United States during a journey spanning more than a month of competition.

Amid the music, lights, and thunderous applause from the stands of Azteca Stadium, Mexico sent a clear message to the world: the 2026 World Cup is not just a football competition but a festival of diversity, connection, and global cultural exchange.
