After a goalless draw against Belgium in the second match of Group G, Iran continues to maintain its chance to advance and even has a wide opening to compete for the top spot in the group. This result not only helps the West Asian representative keep hope of surviving the group stage but also opens up the prospect of a symbolic showdown with the US team in the following rounds.

In the final round, Iran will face Egypt. A victory would not only help coach Amir Ghalenoei's team secure a ticket to advance but also create an advantage in the race for the top spot in Group G. If all results go favorably, Iran could completely write a new milestone in its World Cup participation history.

What makes Iran's journey receive special attention is not only the professional aspect. Since the beginning of the tournament, this team has become the center of many debates regarding entry and travel regulations when playing in the US. The Iranian team is based in the city of Tijuana, Mexico, and is only allowed to enter the US one day before each match.

Immediately after the match ends, the entire team must return to Mexico instead of staying at the match venue like many other teams. The Iranian Football Federation has repeatedly stated that these regulations significantly affect the team's preparation. Iran's coaching staff also expressed concerns that players do not have enough time to adapt to playing conditions and recover physically between matches.

Despite the off-field difficulties, Iran has shown admirable resilience. Against the highly-rated Belgian team, the West Asian representative successfully protected their goal thanks to a disciplined defense and outstanding performance from goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand. Captain midfielder Alireza Jahanbakhsh affirmed that the whole team remains fully focused on the immediate goal. He emphasized: "The most important thing now is to get a good result against Egypt. We will think about the next challenges after achieving the goal of advancing from the group stage."

If the scenario of Iran and the US both advancing deep becomes reality, this will undoubtedly be one of the most attention-grabbing matches at the 2026 World Cup. Beyond mere sporting significance, the showdown is also viewed through a geopolitical lens, as relations between Washington and Tehran still have many disagreements despite both sides' efforts to maintain the ceasefire agreement reached recently.

However, before thinking about that fateful meeting, Iran still needs to overcome the challenge named Egypt. Only by completing the task in the group stage can the West Asian team turn the vision of a historic match with host USA into reality.
