MU takes a major step forward in its plan to build a £2 billion stadium to replace Old Trafford

MU has reached a key milestone in its £2 billion new stadium project, having formally acquired the majority of the necessary land for the construction, anticipated to become "the Wembley of Northern England."

MU is ready for the £2 billion stadium project

According to an announcement from the Old Trafford club, a plot of about 25 acres located between Wharfside Way, Europa Way, and John Gilbert Way has been successfully taken over by the club. This area currently houses several commercial establishments, including the TeamSport go-kart track and a number of car and truck service centers.

This is seen as a major breakthrough in the plan to build a new stadium with a capacity of up to 100,000 seats, located only about 350 meters from the current Old Trafford. Choosing a site close to the traditional stadium helps Manchester United preserve historical and cultural values as well as long-standing fan activities.

Previously, the Red Devils had pursued the option of buying the land behind Old Trafford used by Freightliner as a freight terminal. However, after lengthy negotiations, the two sides could not reach an agreement. According to British media, the valuation gap between them was as much as £360 million, forcing Manchester United to abandon this plan and shift to a new approach.

The club's leadership stated that the acquisition of the new land was carried out through a systematic strategy, allowing the club to save significantly on costs and better align with the overall development direction of the Old Trafford area in the future.

Manchester United's new stadium project managing director, Collette Roche, affirmed that this is an important milestone on the journey to realize the dream of a "world-class home" for the Red Devils.

"Building the stadium right next to Old Trafford allows us to preserve the club's special traditions. We want to create a modern facility that still retains the soul of Manchester United, while ensuring atmosphere, accessibility, and reasonable costs for fans," Roche shared.

In the coming period, Manchester United will enter the design refinement phase with fan groups before submitting a construction permit application. If everything goes smoothly, the new stadium project is expected not only to give the club a new look but also to become a driving force for economic development, job creation, and the regeneration of the entire western part of Manchester city for decades to come.
