Barca faces major trouble in Julian Alvarez case, may receive heavy penalty from FIFA

Barcelona reportedly faces a big hurdle in the Julian Alvarez transfer as Atletico Madrid is considering filing a complaint to FIFA over suspected illegal contact with the player.

The future of Julian Alvarez is becoming one of the hottest topics in the 2026 summer transfer market. Although the Argentine striker is reportedly seeking a new destination, FIFA's strict regulations may prevent Barcelona from easily completing this deal.

After Argentina's 2-0 victory over Austria at the 2026 World Cup, Alvarez unexpectedly left the door open for leaving Atletico Madrid. The 26-year-old striker shared that “the best thing for everyone is a transfer” and affirmed that he wants to fulfill his dream, without revealing a specific destination.

This statement immediately sparked speculation that Barcelona is pursuing the 2022 World Cup champion. However, Atletico Madrid is reportedly unhappy and is considering filing a complaint to FIFA.

The reason lies in the fact that Alvarez still has a contract with Atletico until June 2030. According to FIFA's Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, clubs are not allowed to induce or approach a player who is still under contract without the consent of the parent club.

Notably, FIFA stipulates that if there is sufficient evidence to determine that a new club has influenced a player to break his contract during the "protected period," that club may face very severe penalties.

“The new club will be banned from registering new players, both domestically and internationally, for two consecutive transfer windows”, FIFA's regulations state clearly.

In Alvarez's case, he signed his contract with Atletico when he was over 23 years old. That means the protected period lasts three years from the date of signing. If FIFA determines that there was a violation during this period, Barcelona is at risk of being penalized.

Not only the club, but the player himself can also face consequences. FIFA stipulates that any player who unilaterally breaks a contract during the protected period may be banned from playing for four months in official matches. In cases with aggravating circumstances, the penalty can even increase to six months.

Another detail that makes Atletico confident is the "45-day" rule. Accordingly, if a player signs a contract with a new club within 45 days from the time of breaching the old contract, FIFA may presume that the new club influenced the contract breach. Although this presumption can be rebutted, the involved club must still prove its complete innocence.

Currently, Atletico Madrid has not yet made a final decision on filing a complaint. However, recent developments show that the Julian Alvarez deal is becoming much more complicated than a typical transfer negotiation. For Barcelona, the dream of acquiring the Argentine striker may have to be put on hold if the risk of facing disciplinary measures from FIFA becomes a reality.
