Coach Bui Thanh Nhu: 'Ronaldo sacrificed for the team'

As stated by former Vietnam women's team defender and coach Bui Thanh Nhu, Cristiano Ronaldo remains crucial to Portugal's style of play, ready to put the team first. In contrast, England's stalemate with Ghana was viewed as part of their strategic planning in the group round.

Portugal secured a 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan, with Cristiano Ronaldo leaving a strong mark on the match. The 1985-born superstar constantly moved, supported the play, and drew defenders away to create space for his teammates.

"What impressed me is that Ronaldo still plays with great sacrifice for the overall game. Similar to the match against the Republic of Congo, he was often marked by at least two defenders. His movements opened up many spaces for his teammates to exploit.

The first goal showcased his excellent positioning and goal-scoring instinct. Ronaldo proactively moved to meet the cross and finished neatly. It was a perfect play from organization to execution.

For the second goal, Ronaldo continued to act as an effective decoy. As Uzbekistan's defense focused all attention on him, Mendes unexpectedly became the finisher. Even spectators watching the match thought Ronaldo would take the shot.

In the counter-attack leading to the next goal, Ronaldo deliberately moved away from the central area to open up space on the wing. That movement disrupted the opponent's defense, allowing attacking options to be executed more effectively.

"That was a very good performance from Ronaldo and Portugal. I hope they can maintain this form to go deep in the World Cup," coach Bui Thanh Nhu commented.

In another match, England was held to a draw by Ghana after an impressive display against Croatia. However, this result did not significantly affect Group L's standings, as the Three Lions still lead with a +2 goal difference.

"Personally, I was not surprised by England's draw. The tie with Ghana does not greatly impact England. They remain top of the group and only face Panama in the final round. The coaching staff will surely monitor other groups closely to make sensible calculations.

In my view, the knockout stage is when the big teams will fully unleash their tactical arsenal and strongest options," coach Bui Thanh Nhu shared.
