Vietnam's team faces the world's 7th-ranked team in their opening match

The Vietnam futsal team has been invited by the Football Association of Thailand to take part in the Continental Futsal Championship 2026, which brings together several powerful rivals, such as Russia and the host nation Thailand.

The Vietnam national futsal team will have more opportunities for quality international exposure after officially accepting the invitation to compete in the Continental Futsal Championship 2026, an annual friendly tournament organized by the Football Association of Thailand (FAT). The event will take place from August 1 to 6 in Nonthaburi Province, featuring many highly ranked teams on the world futsal rankings.

Participating in this tournament is seen as a crucial preparation step for coach Diego Giustozzi and his players on their journey toward major goals for Vietnamese futsal in 2026. Besides being a chance to review the squad, the Continental Futsal Championship also helps the players gain more international match experience against high-level opponents from various futsal backgrounds.

The Vietnam futsal team has been invited by the FAT to participate in the Continental Futsal Championship 2026 in Thailand.

According to an announcement from the FAT, this year's tournament includes five teams: hosts Thailand, Russia, Afghanistan, Vietnam, and New Zealand. Among them, Russia is considered the top contender for the championship, currently ranked 7th in the FIFA world rankings and having been runners-up at the 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup. Meanwhile, Thailand, as the host and two-time defending champions, also aims to successfully retain their title.

Unlike many previous international friendly tournaments, the Continental Futsal Championship 2026 will be held in a single round-robin format with points. Each team will face all the other opponents once, and the team with the best performance after four matches will be crowned champion. This format requires teams to maintain consistency throughout the competition rather than focusing only on a few key matches.

The Vietnam futsal team will face four opponents from three continents at the tournament in Thailand.

For Vietnamese futsal, the challenge comes right from the opening day as they take on Russia on August 1. After that, the squad led by coach Diego Giustozzi will successively meet host Thailand, Afghanistan, and New Zealand. This is considered a tough schedule as the Vietnamese team must continuously face top representatives from Europe, Asia, and Oceania within just a few days.

The Continental Futsal Championship was first held in 2021 and quickly became one of the highest-quality friendly tournaments in the region. The participation of Vietnamese futsal in this year's event not only reflects recognition from the Football Association of Thailand of the team's growing stature but also provides an opportunity for Vietnamese players to test their abilities against world-class opponents, thereby aiming for greater goals in the future.
