Similarly accused of doping, the ex-Wimbledon winner faces a 4-year suspension, whereas Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek received punishments lasting just months.
The tennis world is in shock over the news that former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has been handed a 4-year ban after refusing to undergo a doping test at her home last December. Just hours after the decision was announced, the Czech player posted a lengthy statement on social media, asserting her innocence and claiming she has never used any banned substances throughout her career.
According to the authorities' ruling, Vondrousova is suspended from play until 2030, when she will turn 30. This is considered one of the harshest penalties imposed on a Grand Slam champion in recent years.
In her Instagram post, Vondrousova shared the emotional distress she endured during the 7-month investigation. The player who won Wimbledon in 2023 said her life has been overshadowed by anxiety, insecurity, and a sense of losing control.
"I have never used doping. I have never tested positive. Throughout my career, I have undergone countless tests and have always stepped onto the court with a clear conscience.", Vondrousova stated.
The Czech star revealed that just three days after the incident leading to the ban, she was tested again and the result was completely negative. Moreover, during the months-long investigation, she fully complied with her obligation to report her whereabouts and participated in random tests as required.
Vondrousova said she cooperated fully with investigators, provided all necessary information, attended hearings, and tried to prove her innocence. However, all her efforts ultimately could not change the verdict.
"I believed that if I was honest and fully cooperative, everything would be explained. But sometimes that is still not enough.", she wrote.
The former world No. 6 admitted that the past seven months have been the hardest period of her life, robbing her of joy, confidence, and her usual sense of security. Still, the 26-year-old said the ban cannot take away the values she holds dear nor the support from her family and friends.
At present, Marketa Vondrousova has not confirmed whether she will appeal, but experts believe it is highly likely that she will pursue legal avenues to seek a chance to return to the court in the future.
